On November 5th, Tamar Chansky, Ph.D. will present “Helping Children Overcome Anxiety, OCD, and General Worry”
Anxiety disorders are the most common childhood psychiatric condition and the most treatable. In this workshop, participants will learn a new way of understanding the mechanics of anxiety and worry, many child-friendly metaphors for how to explain anxiety to kids. Participants will also learn many activities and strategies for teaching kids to take charge of anxious thinking in regards to specific anxiety disorders as well as more generally when facing common stressors such as tests, grades, experiencing failure and disappointment.
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:
1. Gain an understanding of the mechanisms underlying anxiety and anxiety disorders.
2. Learn many strategies for explaining anxiety to children in ways that will both normalize and empower kids to control their reactions to the challenges they face.
3. Understand what the parent’s role is in treatment of anxiety, and how parents, by their responses to their children’s distress, can teach kids that they have choices in how to respond to the anxious situations.
