The Foundations Community Partnership, Spring workshop series will conclude May 7, 2014 with “Evaluating and Effectively Treating Learning and Behavioral Disorders.”

Students who struggle with learning disorders and disruptive behaviors challenge their teachers and parents to help them succeed. Dr. Ken Schuster will discuss techniques to help child and adolescents with learning and behavioral disorders. Proper identification of and intervention for these difficulties is essential for helping these students stay on track. This workshop will provide an overview of the learning and behavioral disorders and the empirically supported methods used to identify them. Dr. Schuster will also review interventions that help these students develop learning skills, compensate for weaknesses, and achieve school success.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

• Define each of the learning and behavioral disorders according to new guideline and differentiate between them
• Recognize common ways in which learning and disruptive behaviors surface in classrooms, at home, and in other settings
• Develop knowledge of available evidence-based evaluation methods and treatments for use when making referrals and recommendations

Presenter: Ken Schuster, Psy.D., Associate Neuropsychologist, Learning and Development Center, Child Mind Institute is a pediatric neuropsychologist specializing in the evaluation and treatment of learning and behavioral disorders. Dr. Schuster has extensive experience conducting diagnostic evaluations and in-depth neuropsychological, developmental, educational, and personality assessments in children as young as 18 months and across the life span. He is also experienced in conducting functional behavioral assessments (FBA) and implementing response to intervention (RTI). A former educator, Dr. Schuster’s unique perspective enables him to effectively translate test results into reports that provide children, parents, and teachers with practical, realistic and individualized home- and school-based interventions and services. While in the New Rochelle school system, Dr. Schuster provided social skills training, individual counseling, and conducted psychological assessments. He worked closely with families and advocated for children at Committee on Special Education meetings to ensure that students received the appropriate school-based services they needed to thrive. His research has focused on the predictive validity and reliability of brief intellectual batteries.
