Important Topic Opens the FCP 2019 Spring Workshop Series.
The first workshop of the FCP 2019 Spring Series will be presented from 8:30 AM to 12 noon on Wednesday, March 6th, by Matthew B. Wintersteen, Ph.D., and is entitled Depression, Suicide, and Related Mood Disorders in Adolescents.Â
The lifetime prevalence of depression in adolescents is about 25% with adult recurrences of these conditions over 50%. Data suggests 20% of adolescents contemplate suicide. The focus of this workshop is to review current findings and evidence-based treatment practices for depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders in adolescents. Particular attention will be paid to factors contributing to suicide risk and approaches to working with youth at heightened risk for suicide in outpatient settings.
Workshop Objectives
At the end of this activity the learner will be able to:
- List etiologies of mood disorders in adolescents
- Name factors that contribute to suicide risk in adolescents
- Describe effective and efficient safety plans for youth who may be at risk for suicide
Presenter:Â Matthew B. Wintersteen, Ph.D., is Associate Professor and Director of Research in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. His grant-funded work supports his role as facilitator of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Suicide Prevention Coalition, a collaborative partnership among nearly 100 campuses across Pennsylvania designed to support one another in developing meaningful and effective methods of reducing suicide deaths on campus. Dr. Wintersteen has served on national and international task forces convened by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, the American Association of Suicidology, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Suicide Awareness and Voices of Education, and the National Institute of Mental Health. He was a consultant to the National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide (NCPYS), and serves on the Executive Board of Prevent Suicide PA, after spending nearly a decade as the Co-Chair of the Pennsylvania Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative.
