Timely Topic for the Second Spring Workshop!
The Foundations Community Partnership, Spring workshop series will continue on April 2, 2014 with a workshop titled:
“Helping Kids and Families Exposed to Traumatic Events”
This workshop will describe the typical reactions children and families exhibit in the aftermath of trauma exposure, as well as atypical reactions that may indicate the presence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). DSM-V diagnostic criteria will be explained, with recent changes from DSM-IV to DSM-V highlighted. Tips for helping families cope will be reviewed, and information about implementing evidence-based treatments (TF-CBT, Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy) will be described in detail.
Workshop Objectives
At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:
• Differentiate typical from atypical reactions to trauma exposure in children
• Learn the DSM-V diagnostic criteria for PTSD
• Gain knowledge about evidence-based treatments for PTSD, including the purpose of treatment, the gold standard treatments, and basic information about implementing trauma treatment
Presenter: Janine Domingues, Ph.D., Associate Psychologist, Child Mind Institute, Anxiety and Mood Disorders Center, Stress and Resilience Program is experienced in providing cognitive behavioral treatments to children, teenagers, and young adults struggling with anxiety and mood disorders, behavioral problems, and posttraumatic stress disorder. She has a specific interest in helping children and families who have been affected by single and complex trauma, as well as childhood anxiety disorders including separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Dr. Domingues has co-authored scholarly articles for several journals, including the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, and The National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
